Caring for your Tiles
CARING FOR YOUR TILES: A GUIDE TO LONGEVITY AND BEAUTY:
Every tile tells a story. Whether crafted from porcelain, hewn from stone, or fused from metal and glass — proper care keeps that story vibrant for years to come. Here’s how to maintain and protect your tiles based on their material.
Porcelain & Ceramic Tiles:
Durable and low-maintenance, ideal for high-traffic zones.
- Use pH-neutral cleaners and a soft mop or cloth.
- Avoid harsh abrasives or acidic chemicals that dull the glaze.
- Clean spills promptly to prevent staining, especially on matte finishes.
Natural Stone Tiles (Marble, Limestone, Granite, etc.):
Earth’s elegance — but naturally porous and prone to etching.
- Seal regularly (check with your installer for frequency).
- Clean with stone-specific pH-neutral cleaners.
- Avoid vinegar, lemon juice, or other acidic substances.
Glass Tiles:
Luminous and stylish — perfect for splashbacks and accents.
- Wipe down with a glass cleaner or soapy water.
- Use non-abrasive cloths to avoid scratching the surface.
- Inspect grout lines and reseal periodically if exposed to moisture.
Metal Tiles (Stainless Steel, Copper, etc.):
Industrial chic with a modern twist — requires finesse.
- Use a soft cloth and a cleaner suitable for metal (e.g., stainless steel spray).
- Avoid ammonia or bleach; they can damage or discolour metal finishes.
- Buff to maintain shine and protect from moisture if installed near water sources.
Cement Tiles:
Raw, organic beauty with artisan appeal.
- Always seal before and after installation.
- Use pH-neutral cleaners; avoid acids and alkaline cleaners.
- Wipe spills immediately as cement tiles are highly absorbent.
Travertine Tiles:
Warm, timeless, and naturally pitted — often used in outdoor or rustic settings.
- Seal to protect from moisture and staining.
- Use a mild detergent or stone cleaner.
- Fill holes (if unfilled) occasionally to maintain surface integrity.
Terrazzo Tiles:
Bold and character-rich — made from marble, quartz, and other aggregates.
- Seal upon installation and reseal as needed.
- Avoid acidic or highly alkaline cleaners.
- Clean with a neutral pH cleaner and a soft mop.
Pro Tip:
Always test any new cleaning product on a small, inconspicuous area first. And when in doubt, consult your installer or tile supplier for guidance specific to your installation.
