Tiles are Generally Sold in boxes. How to Order the Right Number of Boxes
At Tile Addic, we want to make sure you order the correct quantity—without the guesswork. Tiles are generally sold by the box only, while some mosaics, slabs and some terrazzo are sold as individual pieces. To help you plan accurately, we’ve created a simple, manual method that works for any space, no matter how complex.
Unlike other websites that rely on basic length × width calculators, our approach avoids common pitfalls:
- Multiple rooms or irregular layouts aren’t accounted for
- Island benches, nib walls, doors, windows and recesses often get missed which lead to more tiles being ordered than is required.
- Non-rectangular spaces can throw off automated estimates
We believe manual calculation is more accurate, more flexible, and easy for anyone to do. You can also ask your builder, designer, or contractor to assist—or simply search online for how to calculate square metres.
Follow these simple steps:
1. Measure Your Area/s:
- Measure the total area of the surfaces that you'd like to cover.
2. Add 10% for Cuts & Waste
- It's standard to add ~10% extra to allow for off-cuts, pattern matching, and installation wastage. Read More
- This is optional but highly recommended.
- Multiply your total area above x 1.10 to give you the Total Adjusted Area
3. Find the Tile's Box Coverage
- On each product page, you'll find a “One Box Covers” detail.
- e.g. "One box covers 1.44m²."
4. Calculating the Number of Boxes
- Divide your adjusted area by the coverage per box:
- Total Adjusted Area ÷ Coverage = Boxes Required
- Always round up to the nearest whole box — tiles can’t be sold in partial boxes.
Example:
- Measured Area = 8.00m²
- Total Adjusted Area with 10% extra: 8.00 x 1.10 = 8.80m²
- Tiles Box Coverage = 0.50m²
- Boxes Required: 8.80 ÷ 0.50 = 17.60
- Order 18 boxes
Why we Recommend Ordering an Extra 10% of Tiles
Purchasing approximately 10% more tiles than your calculated requirement, helps account for unexpected breakages, cuts during installation, and ensures continuity in finish and tone.
Why It Matters:
Tiles can vary slightly in colour, size, and texture across batches. By ordering a buffer up front, you minimize the risk of running short and needing to source tiles from a different batch—which may lead to visible inconsistencies.
Future-Proof Your Project:
Keeping spare tiles on hand is always wise. Should replacements be needed down the line due to damage or wear, having extras ensures a seamless fix that matches the original installation.
